Welcome to the 'net!
I'm glad to see more people becoming vocal about the issue of LNG on the Columbia River. RiverVision has been involved less than a year and we are still finding out how complex the issue can be with the debate about jobs, quality of life on the river, and national energy concerns.
These and other aspects of the LNG issue demand a robust conversation among a wide array of people to learn what we want for ourselves and future generations. Let us demand the government and corporations listen to, and heed our concerns.

I am so glad you included a connection to "LNG Watch" on the WFR website here. LNG Watch has a very interesting area on its website called "Facts About LNG." Everyone should read that! Thanks. Terry

The consequences of LNG production
VLADIVOSTOK, Russia, (AFP) - A starved grey whale cub was found dead
in Russia's Far East region of Primorye, boosting local ecologists'
fears that giant oil projects off the nearby Sakhalin island could
make the endangered species extinct.
The cub, which should still have been fed by his mother's milk, died
of starvation, scientists in the Pacific fish industry research
center said, adding that the fate of its mother remained unknown.
This was the second such incident this year after another young
whale died tangled up in fish nets off the Japanese coast.
"The massive death of whales, which we can observe at this moment,
allows us to suppose a repeat of 2000, when starved whales were
first noticed," the WWF's Far East division said Friday in a
statement.
"A year before then, in 1999, the Sakhalin Energy company set up its
first oil extraction platform close to the whales' feeding grounds,
and the whales were forced to leave their only feeding ground
without having replenished their fat reserves necessary for long
migration and the birth and growth of cubs," the statement read.
Environmentalists suggested that this year's danger coincided with
activisation of oil and gas development near Sakhalin, and warned
that the death of at least one female of reproductive age a year
over three years would inevitably destroy the Sakhalin whale herd.
Ecologists repeatedly charge that Sakhalin-II's two new extraction
platforms and an 800-kilometer (500-mile) pipeline, which would
transport oil and gas from the island's north to its south, are a
danger to the island's ecosystem and inhabitants.
Royal Dutch/Shell has a 55-percent majority holding in Sakhalin
Energy, with Japanese companies Mitsui Sakhalin (25 percent) and
Mitsubishi's Diamond Gas Sakhalin (20 percent) holding the remaining
shares.
Deposits involved in the Sakhalin-2 project are estimated at 140
million tonnes of oil and 400 billion cubic metres of gas
respectively.
Sakhalin island is Russia's richest fishing area and its catch is
the local populace's chief source of profit.

LNG activists' spouse harassed by Port Westward LLC CEO Spiro Vapalopois, an owner of Port Westward LNG LLC has began to feel the pressure by the spokesperson of Save Our Columbia River (SOCR) Tammy Maygra, a critic of the proposed Port Westward LNG facility.
Spiro found that Tammys' husband is a business agent of one of the union’s that is hoping to build the LNG facility.
Sprio contacted the head of the NW building trades, Bob Shiprack who Spiro had been in contact with regarding union labor if the project is built. After talking with Shiprack a call was put in to the union, and Tammy's husband was immediately questioned about his wife’s participation in anti-LNG activities.
While Mr. Maygra was being called on the carpet, Spiro was in a meeting with Tammy and a Columbia County Commissioner, at the Commissioners' request. During the meeting Spiro received a call from Bob Shiprack. Both the commissioner and Tammy heard Bob Shiprack identify himself to Spiro, who then left the room to take the call.
When Mr. Maygra came home from work and asked his wife what was going on, the days events unfolded. Spiro’s attempt to drive a wedge between the Maygra’s, by putting pressure through her husbands job didn't work.
After Mr. Maygra contacted the County Commissioner about Spiro’s actions, the commissioner took the Port Westward CEO to task and reprimanded him for his crude, unprofessional actions telling him that Columbia County does not do business that way. If that is the way Port Westward LNG LLC conducts business they are in the wrong county. Afterwards Spiro wrote an apology to the county commissioner, admitting his inappropriate behavior. Port Westward LNG LLC has not made an apology to the Maygra family.
Tammy requested a copy of the letter written to the County Commissioner but was refused the document. Spiro’s actions only intensified her determination to speak out against all LNG facilities.

Hi all...I live in Ocean Park and hope to be more and more active keeping LNG TANKERS OUT of the Columbia River. To that end I have sent an email to AMERICAN RIVERS (americanrivers.org) and invited them to become part of our struggle. I have also sent emails to our 2 Washington Senators for support and have had positive feedback from one. We may have more allies than we know.
Peace

Interesting website. I notice from the article above about the dead whale pup that you decided an 0il platform was to blame. What does that have to do LNG? Is there a direct link to the dead pup to the oil platform. I see also that 1 whale pup was entangled in a net. I guess we better stop all fishing boats now!

* I urge everyone to get familiar with Oregon Dept. Of Energy and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's sites.
http://egov.oregon.gov/ENERGY--check out the ODOE project order for Jordan Cove, Coos Bay. That will give you an idea of what Northern Star will be asked to respond to in their application. Commenting on their application (sometime this fall) will be the next chance to specifically be involved in the application process.
Re the Needs Facility standard, I have a request for info in to Adam Bless on what happened at the Council meeting in Pendleton. My advice would be to go ahead and input on the needs standard and especially the "economic impact" (see website). Adam told the June 14th meeting that we had until mid-July to respond. Please check Peter Huhtula's comments that will be posted on this site.

The Senate voted on Wednesday 6/22/05 by 52 to 45 against giving governors power to veto or impose conditions siting LNG terminals. Wyden, Gordon, Cantwell, and Murray supported the amendment. We need to thank them. Now, as things stand the Senate Energy bill will give FERC the final say on where terminals are built.

I passed through Fall River last week on my way to Cape Cod. I saw the area they are trying to protect from an LNG facility there. It is already almost all industrialized and looked downright ugly.
Here we have our lower Columbia river estuary looking pristine compared to that. How much more should we protect our river from becoming another petroleum wasteland! Terry Kriesel

Please note: Dr. Jerry Havens, Professor of Chemical Engineering, University of Arkansas will speak on safety issues of LNG facilities and tankers on the Lower Columbia River on Monday, August 15th, 7:00 P.M. at the Performing Arts Center, 16th and Franklin, Astoria. This is a "don't miss." Lots of good solid information here!!!

I hope everyone has the August 23rd date on their calendar for WFOR's next meeting, SJFC in Cathlamet, 7 pm.
ODOE has their project order for Northern Star posted on their website. Look it up. It gives an outline of what we can hope to see addressed when NS submits its application. I'll have a couple extra copies at the 8/23rd meeting. It is 43 pages long. Carol

Thanks so much for this site where we can let the big owners of these proposed LNG plants know that there are PEOPLE who live across the river from each of these sites.
The big surprise for us upriver from Bradwood was the letter and phone call we received about 10 days ago informing us the pipeline would go through our properties. One of our neighbors even felt verbally threatened in a phone conversation with a Mr. Crawford for Northern Star. The names and phone numbers of us landowners have been divided between callers and each of us is being given a different story line. Who do you believe? I say NONE of them.
We're fighting alongside the rest of you. I found this website through a google search tonight. Please keep all meetings posted so we have the information. We don't hear what's going on up here across from Port Westward in the Mill Creek area. Part of their strategy--divide and conquer!

Thanks to the 23 people who attended the Steering Committee meeting of Wahkiakum Friends of The River last night. We are beginning to attract people from all up and down the Columbia River who are concerned about the Bradwood site, the proposed pipeline siting etc. One person who attended last night related that he felt he was threatened by a Northern Star employee when he refused permission for Northern Star to come onto his property. Is that indicative of what we can expect when we oppose them in any way? We in Wahkiakum county need to let Northern Star know that we will neither be bribed nor threatened.
We also want to thank Conservation Leaders Network for sponsoring Dr. Jerry Havens visit to Astoria and Portland (8/15 & 16th). Our own WFR people pretty spontaneously contributed over $400 to his visit. The event also provided a chance for our members to talk with other citizen's groups and legal groups working to preserve our river. Dr. Terry Kriesel
