LNG in Nigeria
NPR has an interesting article on "gas flaring"--large-scale burning of natural gas that's seen as a waste byproduct of oil production--in Nigeria, a growing exporter of LNG. Here's a brief excerpt:
Few things are more startling about the Niger River Delta than rounding a curve and encountering an enormous flame ahead. Sometimes it pours out of a smokestack, which reminds you of an oil refinery. Sometimes it comes straight out of a hole in the ground, which makes you think of hell.
What's really happening is that companies are "flaring," burning unwanted natural gas that comes up when they drill for oil.
The U.S. Energy Department said in 2002 that this practice, which produces flames visible from space is "generally unhealthy to humans and ecosystems" and produces carbon dioxide, which has been linked to global warming. Nigeria burns about 42% of its annual LNG production, or about 468 million cubic feet, by flaring.
This article is just one of a series on Nigeria's oil industry, which can all be found here.

I'm down here in Humboldt Cnty and we just had this fight about 6 months ago. You'd better check into this carefully. These lng cos. are stealing the natural gas from S. America and paying them dirt cheap. You will not see any more ng in your area for your use at a cheaper price. They only use your land to offload and then pipe to highest bidder. There is no shortage of nat.gas in this country. there are nat/gas wells capped off. This is a gigantic money-making schene by the lng companies to pollute your pristine area....put you all in danger of a gas cloud from leaks while offloading. Re feds taking precidence over states.
Hogwash, that's illegal..you are a soveraign state and the citizens of that state get prior consideration over feds.
Is this still a democracy? or do the feds dictate what we all do?
Our disagreement with this whole mess was spearheaded mostly by EPIC in Garberville, Ca. I don't have their email address handy, but if anyone wants it,write me.
They move in and woo the local officials with promises that are just hot air...they downplay the dangers...A flaming gas cloud over your city cannot be excaped! Do you have the power or does Wash? Fight back and win. To hell with the edicts from D.C. we are also state citizens with our rights.
I'm a subscriber to OPB saw your plight on their website.
Give em hell!

Just added your site to list of "favorites". Unlike the local politicians in my neighborhood, I have an open mind and appreciate an opportunity to learn.
